La melodia è la celeberrima Greensleeves, brano scozzese del XVI secolo già menzionato da Shakespeare nel suo "Merry Wiwes of Windsor", e che pare abbia origini ancora più antiche. Nel corso dei secoli tale melodia fu abbinata a molteplici testi, di diverso carattere. La versione qui proposta, probabilmente del 1800, offre una delicata rappresentazione del Presepe, in cui la Vergine, gli angeli i pastori e i Magi inneggiano alla nascita del Re dei re.
